The Costa del Sol is a region in southern Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, consisting of coastal towns and villages along the Mediterranean coastline of the province of Málaga.
Costa de la Luz' and the 'Costa Tropical'. Whereas the Costa del Sol used to be a string of small fishing villages with virtually no tourism, today it is a world renowned tourist destination.
Small fishing villages
Historically, the population lived in the small fishing villages, and in the "white" villages inland a short distance from the coast. The area was discovered and developed to meet the demands of international tourism from the 1950s onwards and has since become a popular destination for foreign tourists. Not only for the beautiful beaches and bays, but also for the local culture. The area is particularly famous for places like Marbella, which has given the Costa del Sol a reputation as a playground for celebrities and the super rich.
